I honestly think it was a 50/50 tie. I think no matter which one is elected, our country is in such shambles neither one is or can do anything about it. I just keep reflecting back to the old saying my grandpa told me," The rich get richer and the poor get tore". They both preach about not raising taxes and helping the middle class but let's all be realistic the money has to come from somewhere and that somewhere is from, We The People. The only ones that benefit are the crooks in Washington, D.C.. Thanks for televising the debates but I could have done without them.

The question posed by this blog post was WHO WON the debate, not who are you voting for. President Obama won this debate as soundly as Mitt Romney won the first go around. As a whole, after three debates, both candidates really came out even as the second debate was a draw.

Romney makes an eye rolling claim that he will balance the budget. For the record, "Dwight Eisenhower was last Republican President to preside over a balanced budget. He had a balanced budget in 1956 and 1957. Since then, there have been two presidents to preside over balanced budgets, LBJ in 1969 and Clinton in 1998 through 2001. During the last 40 years there have been five budget surpluses, all five were under Democratic Presidents: 1969, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001.
To clarify, congress authorizes the budget. Between 1955 and 1981 Democrats held majorities in both chambers of Congress. From 1981 - 1987 republicans controlled the Senate, while Democrats held onto the House and then regained the Senate while holding controlling the House as well from 1987 -1995." Let's see...
Romney - fewer teachers and larger classrooms will improve Americas standing in world education.
Obama - more teachers, smaller classes, will improve the education level and help the middle class.
Score: Romney -0, Obama -1
Re: raising taxes:
Romney: He wont raise taxes on people in the top 1%. He wants to cut funding to medicare by making it a voucher system, he wants to increase military spending, and balance the budget. This is all easy to him - he will do it the same way he managed Bain Capital. Layoffs, layoffs, layoffs. Also, simple math says that we need lots of cash from somewhere. Well if he wont raise taxes on the RICH - guess who is going to get the brunt of the tax increase?
Obama - wants to increase taxes on people earning more than $250,000 per year. The 3% to someone earning $250k is $7,500 in additional taxes. A) the $7500 is not much relative to $250k (sure i would want to keep it if i earned that much - but look at the alternative). B) To a person earning $30,000 3% is $900. With the price of groceries and rent/mortgage who do you think needs that 3% more?
Obama has a difficult road ahead for the next 4 years continuing to repair what Bush did over the previous 8 years.
Romney will lead us to a dual class system with the rich and the working class. He may also lead us to WWW III.
G-d help us all.

Hmmm, it's better to have some fiscal responsiblity and cut a few things now rather than having to cut a lot more in the very near future. Obama appointed the Simpson and Bowles commission to look at ways to reduce the overspending - and he completely ignored their bipartisan recommendations. This is one big problem I have with Obama (who I had voted for). He simply does not have it in him to reduce spending and get things under control. He is stuck on this argurment of making captial-gains earner pay more - but even so, that will hardly make a dent in the year-to-year overspending. We have never had such a fiscal mess in U.S. history - this is the most important issue we should be concerned with.

When Bush left office, our economy was in shambles, retirement funds were in the dump, the TARP bailout of the banks and auto industry had been passed, & the world economy was in a tailspin. Nearly all TARP bailout funds were paid back by 2010, yet Obama is scapegoated over a successful job and economy saver law passed by Bush? People angry over Obamacare base it on lies and half truths, like Republican-sponsored provisions exempting Congress that did not pass. Untruths are circulated in ads, by so-called "think tanks", editorials, & politicians. Somehow voters forget the mess this country was in, the horror we all felt as we watched attempts to save coal miners from cave ins miles below the earth due to the owners' exemptions from safety regulations; that coal has been replaced not because of regulations but because gas is cheap. If you can't be bothered to "truth check" what you read & hear, try just reading the news (& what happened to your retirement plans & investments) from the months just before and after Obama took office to help you remember how the lack of regulations didn't produce jobs. It killed miners, businesses, jobs, our economy and left a lot of people homeless as their homes were foreclosed on. Read anything from 2008 - http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/26/business/worldbusiness/26iht-layoffs.1.17246245.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0 . Obama guided us out of that tailspin. My answer? Yes, we are in far better shape today then we were when Bush left us in a mess.

Remember, the whole financial meltdown was becuase the Dems, led by Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, built a financial foundation on giving loans to people who could not pay them back. When they stopped paying on the loans, the Dems' house of cards came crumbling down.

Let the libs blame George Bush! In his second term he was faced by a Democratically controlled Congress. The TARP was started by "Slick Willie" Clinton. Frank & Dodd were the spear carriers. We got attacked 9/11. Bush didn't receive help from the U.N. He was forced to do it alone. The budget was busted due to the expediency of the problem. War Bonds were not sold due to American unpopularity. Home Security, TSA & other groups had to be formed at great cost. The second Iraq invasion truly cost us Obama and others voted for this great financial decline.

@FindBalance - You have spit out the conservative rhetoric and have ignored the millions of people who lost their jobs and therefore their homes. Or banks who continued to inflate prices of homes when the correction had been forecast for years making it impossible to sell your home and get out of debt. How about the banks that Robo closed on mortgages and refused to negotiate deals to get some of their money back as opposed to foreclosing and letting the house and neighborhood decay. Even with banks lending money to some that should not have been given mortgages, banks continue to make record profits - - it's not the people buying houses that are the problem and it's not Dodd/Frank - -it's the banks manipulating the citizens every step of the way.

I am a Canadian, I worry if Romney became President that would affect everyone around the world in a very negative way. just because Romney can change his colours like a chameleon does not make it true. Romney is for the super rich, period, he is an agressive, errogant man that is part of the elite that takes to fill their pockets and does not give a damn about the average people. He believes himself to be better than the rest of us, that is NOT a leader, thats a destroyer. Just listen to what his son said after the second debate was finished. Romneys son said he wanted to punch Obama in the face, except that he knew he could not because of the security. THat says alot about what a man is really about. And what someone says behind closed doors is really what they believe, the rest is simply to con the masses by saying whatever it takes to win an election. The 47% Mitt said to his pals the very rich, behind closed doors, is the real Mitt Romney. A good question to be asked is why does he want to be President. I hope everybody goes out and votes Obama. Please dont forget what happened before Obama took office, it is alot for any one to fix in 4 years.. THis is an extremely important vote for all of you. To have Mitt as your leader & Ryan. Yikes, go back and really look at what they believe, what they show on the outside is just a facade, I love you he says, while stabbing you in the back. Us Canadians hope for Obama, the alternative is too dangerous for us all.

Romney's track record of helping build and make companies successfull, doing the same thing financially and operationally with the Olympics, and track record as Governor (when he took office, MA was 49 in new job creation, when he left office, MA was 30 - Obama forgot to mention that) proves he is qualified to clean up Obama's failure to bring the country back.
Romney is not for the super rich, he is for creating an environment that will encourage success; when that happens, people get rich. Just because you didn't do it doesn't mean it's a bad thing. And in this country, everyone has the opportunity to be successful.
And Obama wants to be president so he can finish the job of changing the way America "fundamentally works" (Obama's words).

Hey Dave Lenane, If you are being at all objective, or should I say fair and balanced, you would agree the economy is a mixed bag. The S&P 500 index is about + 36% for the last 3 years and the DJIA is about + 35% for the same period. As for layoffs, don't layoffs lead to leaner more profitable enterprises and therefore good news for our 401Ks. Isn't that the Bain way?

I don't believe Obama is used to being challenged in anything. He has been handed things his entire life. Not saying he didn't work hard once he got into Harvard and Columbia...but how many people that have gone through 2 Ivy's come out of it having a hard time getting by in life?
Romney was called a wimp early in the campaign by some media outlets. Then he stood up to Obama and was labeled a bully.
I cannot understand why media and celebrity types, who are well into "Republican" areas of salary, always side Democrat? What does Seth MacFarlane(creator of Family Guy, $100M contract with Fox) or Alec Baldwin know about being "working class"? Then again, with all of this big money coming in from celebs and Super PACs, when was the last time either party in America truly represented the working class....?

I cant hold back laughing. The Obama's came from middle class families and earned money the regular way - they earned it. Romney has more money than the last 7 presidents COMBINED. The reason he pays 14% income tax is because he ONLY has interest income. In other words he lives off the interest of his investments and is still able to give millions away. If Obama has a silver spoon, then Romney has the titanium spoon.
Chris L.

So why the continued whining over his tax rate. Let's do some real-world math, not Democrat math.
14% of 85K < 14% of 20M
sounds to me like they're paying their share. also, I don't own more than one(or even one) house worth a million dollars. So i'm not paying taxes on that. even the Obama's are.
I love how everyone in the Democratic Party is "middle class" but everyone who has money or was born into money is vilified.
Now let's talk about the richest member of Congress. A man who just recently moved his boat BACK from Rhode Island, where he had parked it to get a lower tax rate.
That's right Democrats, your senior Senator from Massachusetts and former Democratic nominee for President, John "I married into mine" Kerry!!!!
How short your memories are.

Chris L - i agree with you - it is an embarrassment that ANY politician would do what Kerry did. I am glad he was caught and made to rectify what he did.
I would also agree that Obama has ghosts and imperfections in his closet. He is not perfect, he is not a saint - far from it.
Personally - i am more concerned about how Romney will "balance" the budget - at what cost? He has stated that classroom sizes should be larger - not smaller - this is a concern. When he was gov of MA he cut state funding to towns and many towns around us aren't doing too well. fortunately we have a good team running our town (no idea their political views) and they have kept nboro in better than just "good" shape. In fact, MA as a whole is in better shape with health care, property taxes, schools - than most of the other states in the US. Last night Romney tried to take credit for some of this - but he has been out for 10 years - and the dems have been running the state since. also some of the programs he tried to take credit for - were in place before he came to office.
so i am not an obama lover - but rather - just scared of romney's ideas of what should be done and how to go about it.
Chris L.

I look at it like this:
Say you live in a house with 5 people, all different ages, different backgrounds, different interests. You have decided to pool your money to pay bills, etc, and you've gone deep into collective debt.
Who is better to lead you out of the debt? The guy who makes some tough decisions and makes cuts to things that interest you and maybe others? Or the guy that just keeps borrowing money until someone comes and "repos" everything?
China owns a lot of our debt. We also have a lot of debt owned by private entities. At what point do our creditors say that $16 TRILLION (and growing) is enough? and when do they come to collect?
MA is in a lot better shape, but we have some industries that were close to recession-proof. Our tax base is still strong. But we have problems too. Our welfare rolls are troubling, and Patrick and Coakley's stance on Immigration is going to cost us dearly if allowed to continue.
As far as taking credit for programs...that's all politicians. The CIA and DoD were actively looking for OBL for a little more than 7 years before Obama took his oath, Its not like it was HIS idea to find the guy. He made the tough call when they found him, I will admit. But it was far from being his idea.
This is all the old South Park episode. You have to choose between a giant d*uche and a turd sandwich.....

I don't usually comment online but since this was about international affairs... did anyone notice that Romney said 'Great Britain' and Obama used 'United Kingdom'? I'm sure the people of Northern Ireland picked up on that one. That use of terminology shows that lack of experience in foreign affairs... and lack of education in history. It's the UK or the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It's understandable for the common American to make that mistake....inexcusable for a Presidential candidate.
So there is no question Obama won the debate.I saw Romeny just hoping to not make any mistakes....... because, frankly, while the world is a tumultuour place, the Obama administration has patched of 8 years of detachment from world affairs (look at the first 10 months of international actions by Bush) and the aftermath of a hand-ons geopgraphy lesson of the Middle East. All within an un-united Congress. And while being a person of African heritage. IMHO, quite a feat.
In my household, we know a lot about the business of health care. Obama, like fixing the financial mess, is spot on when it comes to health care.He is doing the right thing for the long term. Money is being save RIGHT NOW... it is already effective. The yuppie MD's from the 80's might not be allowed to over examine & test us anymore (which is not popular with that group)but we will have more internist because the specialists are not being reward unduly.

your last link is troubling though - and off this topic. it implies that Israel should not exist. it ignores the pains Israel has gone through to facilitate the new Palestinian people - who do not recognize Israel and has in its bible to eliminate Israel. I say "new" Palestinians because as recently as the 1960's the Palestinians WERE the Israelis. the PLO changed created this wedge and redefined the term Palestinian.

Romney knows the economy is the main issue and that he's ahead in this race. All he had to do in the third debate was appear knowledgeable and presidential and not appear to be argumentative or pugnacious. He did just that, and made Obama look argumentative and pugnacious. It's called Rope-a-Dope and it worked brilliantly in my opinion. Obama may have won on debate points, but I believe he lost votes rather than gained them.
