Traffic Stopped as Crews Battle Brush Fires on 290 East
The Mass State Police are recommending drivers take an alternate route home this evening.
There is a significant traffic back-up due to several brush fires along Route 290 east in the Northborough and Marlborough area, said the Massachusetts State Police.
At 5:10 p.m., troopers closed several ramps along 290 east, however, those ramps were reopened at 5:40 p.m.
A curiosity factor has also caused significant delays on the westbound side as well.
State police suggest motorists seek alternate routes until emergency crews clear the scene.

Why did this happen? I was driving by 290East today around 440PMish and there was several small fires along the right side of the road. It wasnt one bush of fire, it was like 10 small fires all spread out ! Whats going on?!

Hi, I've contacted the fire department. I post an update in the morning if not sometime tonight. It is kind of a weird situation.

FD says it was likely caused by careless disposal of cigarettes. The ground is very dry right now and the fire spread to different areas along the highway. Look for an updated story Tuesday a.m. with more details.

I think it was arson. I drive West at this time every night and have done so for 8 years. Never a fire - ever - on the side of the road - even in the driest of times. 6 random cigarette butt fires over a 2-3 mile stretch?? Unlikely. This was someone acting out bc the Pats lost. My theory.....

Wasnt there a grass fire a coupl eof miles south on 495 the day before? I tend to agree sounds like arson
