A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 11 tonight for Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, western Maine and northeastern Connecticut.

Meteorologist Matt Noyes tweeted the update just before 5 p.m. Sunday. Earlier in the day, there were tornado watches in parts of New England, outside MetroWest.

The storms are expected to include strong and damaging winds plus torrential downpours. The storms could also include frequent, vivid lightning.

Those downpours may cause flooding in small streams and poor drainage areas.

By midday on Saturday, a tornado watch had been issued for parts of Connecticut and western Massachusetts.
