It's All About the Apps

Short and Sweet Outing – There's an "App" for That.

No, I'm not talking about an application for your smart phone. Here, I'm talking about appetizers!! Just the word itself makes my mouth water. Truth be told, sometimes the appetizers are the best part of dinner. For me, it is a challenge to not eat too many so I can still have room for my dinner.

As a mom, you may not have the time or the budget to go out for an entire, pardon the pun, “soup to nuts” meal every single time. Maybe you're a brand new mom and you don't yet feel comfortable leaving your baby with a sitter while she's awake. So, you wait until you've tucked her in and go get away from it all for a shorter period of time.

Whatever the reason, meeting some friends and/or family members for drinks and apps is just plain fun! Talk, complain, heck even watch sports on TV because it's something different to do! You do not have to drink alcoholic beverages either. I don't think I've ever seen a place with a wide assortment of cocktails that does not provide virgin (i.e. no imbibition) options.

I polled my mom friends for the best apps 'n drinks in town. They had many terrific suggestions! Craving Italian? Try Sorento's Tuscan shrimp or bruschetta. Got a big group of 15 or more? Sorento's offers family style portions of appetizers or salads if you prefer. Enjoy a relaxing glass of wine and take in the ambiance.

Chloe is an American bistro with a European accent. Cod cakes were highly recommended and they even have live jazz on Friday and Saturday nights!

Are you looking for more traditional fare? How about free popcorn, cheap beer and wings with their famous “Buzz sauce”? also has entertainment (both interactive games and live music) 4 out of 7 nights a week. You'd be hard-pressed at Applebee's to not find almost any cocktail or appetizer under the sun (to name a few: margaritas, martinis and classics paired with mozzarella sticks, spinach and artichoke dip and cheeseburger sliders).

Finally, if you're in the mood for something specific, say Rhode Island-style calamari or caviar dip? Try or Texas BBQ. Although there are no sturgeon eggs in Texas BBQ's dip, it is a yummy salsa made of black-eyed peas, jalapenos, avocado, tomato and purple onion and cilantro and it's served with homemade chips. Both restaurants have a full bar.
