How Do I Run For Office?

With 16 positions up for election this year, one local reader was curious how they could run for office.

With Mayor Vigeant having already pulled papers to run for re-election and races for City Council and School Committee positions, one reader wanted to know how to get involved and begin running for a position.

The first step is pulling papers for the position you are interested in. Those papers are available now at the City Clerk's Office in City Hall. But pulling the papers does not mean you are ready to campaign.

You must obtain 50 signatures of registered voters in the city and return those signed papers so that they can be reviewed by city officials.

The Races are:

  • Mayor for two year term
  • Four At Large Councilors for two year term
  • Seven Ward Councilors for two year term
  • Three School Committee members for four year terms (Michelle Bodin-Hettinger, Jennifer Hardy and Mark Hediger)

August 16, 2013 at 5 p.m. is the deadline to obtain nomination papers. All nomination papers must be returned for signature certification no later than August 20, 2013 at 5 p.m.

The Preliminary Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, October 8, 2013, if applicable. The Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2013.
