Get Fit with Crossfit

People of any age and fitness level will benefit from Crossfit training.

"Skinny and/ or big muscles don't automatically equal healthy," Tom Tecca patiently explained, standing inside his gym. Resting a black-cloth weighted bag on one shoulder, a client did a repetition of lunges past us as Tecca paused to offer a word of encouragement to her.

A year ago Tecca opened a Crossfit Training gym in the heart of Marlborough, named Crossfit of Marlboro. Crossfit Training is a strength and conditioning program that has been rapidly gaining popularity over the past few years. The appeal?

This is a workout free from monotony and clunky, confusing machinery. This method is inclusive of all age groups and fitness levels.

"In Crossfit, you are the machine. Thirty-minute workouts of dynamic timed exercises and reps boost your heart rate. A strong heart will allow the rest of your body to function better," Tecca exclaimed.

Branches of the armed forces, police, firefighters and professional athletes incorporate Crossfit into their training program. But don't think Crossfit is confined to the elite. The beauty of the program is that it can be tailored to any fitness level and age. A person in Special Forces will be doing the same exercises as a middle-aged person fighting diabetes. The load and intensity are scaled to individual fitness levels and capabilities, but the program remains unchanged.

Jumping rope, kettlebells, rowing, running, rope climbing and pull-ups are all included in training.

"The biggest part of my job is to take you back to ground zero and realign your body to work around past injuries and determine your body's initial capabilities from which to build."

And Tecca knows a thing or two about injuries. He has had both hips replaced, but that has not slowed him down in the least.

The majority of his clients range in age from 30 to 50 years old. He estimates that 60 percent of his clients are female and forty percent male. And no excuses can be made about not being able to get to the gym because of work. Tecca's gym offers classes as early as 5 a.m. to help jumpstart your day.

"The bottom line is that this is probably one of the best ways to get physically fit. Crossfit is changing the face of how people train," Tecca remarked as he walkedby the ropes dangling from the ceiling and kettle bells of varying size lined beside a wall.
