Fatal Police-Involved Shooting Under Investigation
A fatal police-involved shooting of a man with a knife on Monday night is under investigation by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.
The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office is conducting an investigation into the facts and circumstances surrounding a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred Monday evening at 52 Meadow Brook Road in Marlborough.
According to a release from the office, at approximately 8 p.m. Monday Marlborough Police responded to 52 Meadowbrook Road for a domestic disturbance to assist in the removal of an unwanted person from a residence.
Upon arrival, police were confronted by a man armed with a knife, according to officials. A Marlborough police officer discharged his weapon, according to the District Attorney's Office. The man that was shot was identified as Bryce Coutinho, 22, and pronounced dead at the scene.

My condolences to BOTH the young man's family and the Officer who was forced to end the situation this way. Deadly force is never anything any officer wishes to use, but many times the situation deems it necessary.

Right, it's all the police's fault. It has nothing to do with the person coming at them with a knife. Did you want those horrible, brutal officers to get stabbed to death so they could satisfy you and try to taser or pepper spray the kid? And when adrenalin kicks in it doesn't matter how big or small you are.
I'm sick of delinquents trying to blame the cops for everything. If someone's coming at me with a knife and I have my gun in my hand you can be damn sure I'm going to use it.

Bryce didn't have a gun he had a knife I agree w/ Amy a taser should have been the first thing tried. My son was close to Bryce in High School and yes he might have had issues but fatally shooting him seems excessive to me.

I am not a Law Enforcement Officer but, I am told that the primary objective is to go home at the end of each shift. If he/she only has a fraction of a second to decide how to accomplish that, then we should be glad we aren't in that situation and therefore not assume or judge. It is sad for all involved. (J)

Like everyone else, I don't know the particulars. That said, if someone threatens the life of a Police Officer, or he decides he needs to fire to protect another, I fully support that decision and thank him/her for their service to the community. If anyone is stupid enough to take a situation to the point where a Police Officer fears for his or another's life, then they should expect this outcome. Stop whining and show support and respect for those who put themselves in harms way to protect you.

OK, as a Law Enforcement Officer I feel that some of the people commenting on this are out of line. A knife IS A DEADLY weapon. In an FBI Study it takes 21 feet of space from the subject to the officer in order recognize the attack and formulate a response to said attack. Tasers are a great tool however some things that need to be taken into account are movement of the subject and the range at which the subject is from the officer. And also guess what if you want every LE Officer to carry a taser expect a large increase in your taxes that money has to come from somewhere. Pepper spray will cause an irritation and is not guaranteed to stop the potential attack, and some people all be it a small percentage have no response to pepper spray. Some things also to consider for pepper spray are wind and location of other personnel. As for shooting at the legs or arms as opposed to the body or head, NO agencies train there officers to kill, Officers are trained to stop an attack. And besides which how many of you have shot firearms before more importantly shot a pistol at a moving target. To hit someone in the leg or arm sounds easy and sure the shows on TV make it look it easy but it is not unless the subject is extremely close and by that time it may be to late. No one commenting knows the facts or circumstances surrounding this to go out and say that it is the Police Officers fault is ignorant and judgmental. My thoughts and prayers are with both families.

I agree with most of what you say. However what is missing in this story and every other one I've read is what the suspect did, or was doing, right before he was shot. If he was coming at the officer, which is likely the case, well, all bets are off. From what I read - nowhere does it say police declined to say - it doesn't even look like anyone in the media asked. That's a real problem with the media.

Domestic violence perpetrators who have attempted to kill their partner and/or themself (both of which he had done as has been reported elsewhere) are highly lethal, and this man was in active violation of a court order. To my understanding these officers and the family being threatened had every reason to think their lives were at stake and to respond accordingly.

My condolences to all parties involved. This officier obviously reacted in a manner that he felt necessary given the situation. We were not there so we do not know the true circumstances only what has been voiced here, on facebook and in the news. I am very sorry this young man lost his life, a mother lost a son and the officers/emergency responders lives have been changed. We as a city are lucky to have a great group of officers on the force.

I as a citizen I want to know EXACTLY what happen in the 9 minutes between the first distubance call and the medical call. I don't know anyone who thinks Bryce did the right thing that night but did his action constuite a fatal gun shot wound. If he had tried to commit suicide why was he not in the hospital recieving treatment. There are way to many questions not enough answers and people shouldn't stop asking until we have the answers to what happen to a son,brother,friend...
