Police Targeting Drunk Drivers in Marlborough

A $6,000 grant will be used to target drunk drivers in Marlborough.

Marlborough will be deploying officers to catch drunk drivers and those not wearing seatbelts using a $6,000 grant from the state.

The city's police will be enforcing the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click it or Ticket programs from the state using a grant from the State Executive Office of Public Safety.

"The grant is a reimbursement grant and will be used for high visibility traffic
enforcement, specifically targeting drunk drivers," Police Chief Mark Leonard wrote in a letter to Mayor Arthur Vigeant.

The city will provide an additional $1,500 towards the three mobilizations paid for by the grant. One mobilzation targeting drunk driving occured at the end of December. The remaining two mobilizations will take place from May into June and then August into September.

The grant covers both police hours and vehicle fuel.

Now I don't want a drunk driver on the road but there has to be an injured party for a crime to be committed. And I believe it's up to the driver to ware a seat belt. The 6000.00 grant is an investment that they'll make back 10 fold with tickets and drunk driving school. We don't need more revenue officers.

No. There doesn't have to be an injured party for a crime to be committed. Driving drunk IS a crime. It's on the books. Look it up.

What I find interesting, is we have the hands-free law in Mass for now driving and talking on the phone. I cannot tell you how many times i am driving around Marlborough, and I see officiers driving in their cruisers "talking on the phone", and not hands-free, but holding the phone to their ear. and, further to that, you can tell it is not business, and they are smiling and laughing. If I did that (which I don't), and if an officier saw me doing that, guess what? I'd be fined.....I just find it disturbing to say the least.
