City Councilor Mark Oram called for residents to take extra care around dusk and early evening as the council received a communication from the Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project (CMMCP).

"The last month has been a horrific month for public safety," he said Monday referencing the discovery of West Nile Virus (WNV) in Marlborough and the consequences across the state.

He urged residents to take extra care during the time of highest risk, which is dusk and early evening.

"We should limit all our activities from dusk till dawn," said Oram who explained that this advice was intended to inform and not panic.

He spoke out during the meeting following a communication from the CMMCP to the council in which the organization thanked the council and other city offices for their ongoing assistance with the threat of WNV and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

To date, 51 collections of mosquitoes with either West Nile Virus or EEE, or both, have been made in the organization's 25 member cities & towns.

The community is entering into the highest risk part of the season, said Timothy Deschamps, the executive director of CMMCP in the letter.

"Risk from mosquito-borne disease may be present even after spraying, and will be present until we have several widespread, killing frosts," he said.
