AMSA Blends High Academic Goals With Strong Athletics

Accomplished Advanced Math & Science Academy student athletes received extra attention this week.

The Advanced Math & Science Academy is being recognized throughout the state for not only its academic program, but also its competitive, 4-year-old sports program.

"No school is better in the state," when it comes to blending lofty academic goals with a sports program, AMSA Executive Director John Brucato told the Boston Globe.

The publicly funded charter school had its first graduating senior class in the spring of 2011.

AMSA sophomore Joel Wilner, who was playing baseball before fracturing his clavicle, serves as an example of the types of student athletes AMSA attracts and retains. He's captain of the baseball team, the speech and debate team and the Quiz Bowl team. He plays the piano and is a prize-winning essayist. Those are just a few of his accomplishments.

AMSA's young sports program has plans to expand. For more on the school and some of its players, see the Globe's full article.
