5 Things You Need to Know Today: Aug. 30

Here is a list of things going on in and around Marlborough today.

1. We are in store for another nice day. The National Weather Service says it will be sunny with a high of 80 degrees. 

2. In case you hadn't seen this: The have delayed their first day of classes until Sept. 6. Details as well as the latest from AMSA and Assabet Valley . 

3. Marlborough resident and Mount Auburn Hospital employee, Maureen Power, was recently honored at Mount Auburn Hospital for being a consistent blood donor over the past year. Maureen was honored for her on-going commitment to helping people through blood donation. Great job, Maureen!

4. Your home and wallet may take a serious beating when a big storm like Hurricane Irene hits and Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to be wary of fly-by-night “storm chasers,” as well as fraudulent charities promising to provide relief, says the Marlborough chapter of the BBB. Storm chasers and other door-to-door salespeople often peddle dubious deals that may cost homeowners thousands of dollars and create serious headaches. BBB recommends doing your research to avoid getting taken advantage of by untrustworthy home contractors and the like. 

5. OARS, the watershed organization for the Assabet, Sudbury and Concord rivers, will hold its 25th Annual River Cleanup on Saturday Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to Noon in Marlborough. OARS volunteers will continue the effort to restore the Assabet, Sudbury and Concord rivers and local streams by removing trash from the shores and waters.  They will haul trash, tires, bottles, car parts, bicycles – whatever should not be there – for appropriate disposal. Details and meeting locations will be available on their website.
